Everything in the shop is handmade and are original designs. The signature style of Le Neko Noir is the blending of classic or charming with some design element that is cute or quirky. Often employing methods reminiscent of yesteryear such as hand embroidery, hand screen printing or block printing etc. The end result is best described as cute, charming and cheeky. Like the cute but quirky sleep masks with hand embroidered cat and owl faces. Or the cheeky lunch tote hand screen printed with cute forest creatures and their respective eating habits and definitions: Omnivore, Carnivore, Herbivore. To name a few
who? About the designer
Annie André is a self taught Indie Designer, Crafter, Owner and Creator of Le Neko Noir the Brand, Boutique and the Blog. She designs and makes things that are a direct reflection of her eclectic taste. Her functional designs are a blend of cute and quirky and are meant to appeal to your inner child. She draws her inspiration from Dark Fairytales, forest creatures and Wanderlust. The latter is a direct result of her travels through France and 3 years of living in the quirky offbeat city of Tokyo Japan.
After getting laid off from her job in California in 2007, while pregnant with her third child, she bought her first sewing machine. She decided to start her own line of bags, baubles and lifestyle products and accessories that were a reflection of her eclectic & quirky style. Having never learned to sew, she started on the daunting task of teaching herself what seemed to her to be an ancient and lost art. Once she mastered the sewing, she taught herself to hand embroider, screen print and other various embellishment techniques. All the while, she was designing her ecommerce shop, planning designs and being a wife and mother. After 2 years in the making, in 2009 she opened her online boutique called Le Neko Noir. For now, she designs and makes everything in the shop herself by hand. She plans to keep production local and someday she hopes to hire a few talented men and women to help her in-house.
where?
For now, Annie does her own designs and makes everything herself from her home in Belmont CA, in a room converted into a studio. It’s crammed with bolts of fabric, books, 2 sewing machines and lot's of thread and buttons.
Why?
Le Neko Noir's main purpose is to design functional, unique and quirky lifestyle products & accessories that evoke a sense of charm and mischievousness. Items you find here in the shop will have a wide appeal because of their playful nature.
What Does "Le Neko Noir Mean?
Le Neko Noir, pronounced "Luh Necko nwohr" is similar to a portemanteau. "The Blending of two or more words and their meanings into a new word". In this case, two languages are blended. “Neko” is Japanese for Cat.“Le” and “Noir” are French meaning “the” and “Black” respectively. Le Neko Noir means the black cat. Cats are prevalent in both culture and it seemed appropriate and a good fit to mix the two languages.
